Auxiliary Power Systems

Auxiliary Power Systems

Purpose Built

Electric Auxiliary Power Supplies (EAPS) or Auxiliary Power Units (APU) are essential for Electric Multiple Units (EMU). These units convert the overhead line voltage (typically 1500VDC or stepped down 25000VAC) to supply battery chargers and three phase inverters onboard the train.

Power Management

Our systems include multiple battery bank chargers, each dedicated to specific loads like control and lighting, with at least one battery bank per car for emergencies and separation. When the overhead line voltage is absent or interrupted, the batteries supply the loads. When the overhead line voltage is present, the battery chargers supply the loads and recharge the batteries. The inverters typically power air conditioning and compressors.

Designed for Excellence

Redundancy and reliability are crucial design factors in the rail industry. Our designs follow  International and European standards for rolling stock electronic equipment, EMC, and Shock & Vibration (EN50155, EN50121-3-2, EN61373).

Effective, Flexible, Reliable.

Advanced Rail Electronics' Modular Technology Concept (MODTEC) offers unparalleled flexibility for your train layout. Space is always at a premium, especially during refurbishments. With MODTEC, you can strategically place the main components of the EAPS (i.e. battery chargers and inverters) wherever space constraints allow. This distributed layout simplifies installation and maintenance whilst minimizing spare parts.

Customizable and Efficient
If you have room for a traditional roof mount EAPS, Advanced Rail Electronics can design an all-in-one compartmentalized enclosure for quick installation. Redundancy is a critical design factor in the rail industry, and MODTEC can support this with redundant systems or components placed in unconventional but available areas.

Ease of Transport and Maintenance
Lifting points and pockets come standard, ensuring easy transport, installation and maintenance.
